Our essential question this term is
'Can you ever win a war?'
In the Britain at War project, your child will learn about the main causes of the First World War and which countries were the major players. They will investigate why so many men volunteered to fight and then sequence the events at the start of the war. Using various sources of evidence, the children will learn about life in the trenches and the consequences of new weaponry. They will listen to first-hand accounts of life on the home front and evaluate the impact of war on everyday life. They will also discover the events that led to the Allied Powers’ victory and the consequences of the Treaty of Versailles. The children will also learn about the causes and main events of the Second World War. They will find out how Britain prepared itself for war and the war’s impact on civilian life. They will learn about the Battle of Britain and how it proved to be a key turning point for the Allied Powers. They will also hear about Anne Frank and discover what her story tells us about the treatment of Jewish people by the Nazi Party. The children will research the causes and consequences of the end of the Second World War and investigate the legacy of the wars in Britain. Closer to home, the children will research the life of a local First World War hero who sacrificed their life fighting for Britain. They will also investigate the legacy of these global conflicts in the post-war period.
Our current class novel is Private Peaceful

PSHE events
Year 6 will have a visit to the Crucial Crew event which aims to support our PSHE curriculum by developing the children's understanding of personal safety.
To support our Economic Education, we are holding a Careers Fair for years 5 and 6. We are very fortunate to have volunteers from a range of industries who will share their working experience with the pupils and answer their questions.

This year, our year 6 production is Wind in the Willows. Your child may have a speaking part or be involved in scenery and prop design. The performance will take place on 12th July - 1:30 (small children allowed) or 6:30 for adults and older children only please.

Reading - Your child should read every day at home and record their reading in their orange reading record. They should be reading enough pages of their book to change their book frequently - ideally at least fortnightly.
Spelling - Fun spelling games can be found on Spelling Shed – your child should play a few games on Spelling Shed most days. They can choose which spelling patterns to focus on, or have a go at the list of 100 statutory spellings.
Maths - Children are also expected to use TTRockstars to practise their times tables several times a week. We will occasionally set tournaments on TTRockstars so that the children can have class competitions.
Passwords
All passwords for these home learning games are written on the inside front cover of their reading records and children are familiar with how to log on. Please let us know if you have difficulty accessing these games.
