PE and Sport Premium
PE at The Beeches Community Primary School
PE at The Beeches Primary School is an integral part of school life. The aim is to encourage pupils to have a life long interest and enjoyment of physical activity. The government has given 5 key indicators that schools should be expected to see improvement across and one is that 'the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school'. Pupils in Reception, Nursery and KS1 pupils develop fundamental skills looking specifically at movement, agility, balance, coordination, individually and with others. Pupils in KS2 build on their work in KS1, improving their skills and understanding in a variety of areas of activity including games, athletics, gymnastics, dance, outdoor activities and swimming. Taking part in competitive games is a key part of the KS1 & KS2 curriculum.
Pupils are also given the chance to take part in a wide range of extra curricular PE activities at lunchtimes and after school throughout the academic year. There are a large number of opportunities to take part in local intra school fixtures, festivals and competitions. The school is a member of IPSSA (Ipswich Primary School Sport Association) and works closely with the Ipswich School Games Organiser.
Through our engaging and enjoyable PE provision, we want our pupils to become physically active for continued periods of time, take part in competitive sports and activities, lead healthy, active lives and develop competence in a broad range of physical activities.
PE Premium Funding
Allocations for the academic year 2017 to 2018 are calculated using the number of pupils in years 1 to 6, as recorded in the January 2017 census, as follows:
schools with 17 or more pupils receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil
schools with 16 or fewer pupils receive £1000 per pupil
In the case of a school which has opened or is due to open during the 2017 to 2018 academic year, the above formula will apply based on pupils recorded on the autumn 2017 school census.
Purpose of funding
The premium must be spent by schools on making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport for the benefit of all pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. The Secretary of State does not consider the following expenditure as falling within the scope of additional or sustainable improvement:
employing coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements - these should come out of schools’ core staffing budgets
teaching the minimum requirements of your existing PE curriculum
Academies and free schools must publish, on their website, information about their use of the premium by 4 April 2018.
Schools must publish:
the amount of premium received
a full breakdown of how it has been spent (or will be spent)
what impact the school has seen on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment
how the improvements will be sustainable in the future
how many pupils within their year 6 cohort can do each of the following:
swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
use a range of strokes effectively
perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
